HUNGER: THE NUMBER ONE KILLER IN THE WORLD
Hunger is more deadly than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
Every four seconds, someone, somewhere, dies of hunger.
· 24,000 people will die of hunger today;
· 18,000 of them will be children under the age of five.
· This is down from 35,000 ten years ago, and 41,000 twenty years ago.
· Each day over 840 million people go to bed hungry.
Famine and wars cause about 10% of hunger deaths, although these tend to be the ones you hear about most often. The majority of hunger deaths are caused by chronic malnutrition. Families facing extreme poverty are simply unable to get enough food to eat.

It takes only 19 cents a day to feed a child at school. For most of us, that is next to nothing. But for millions of children who are not enrolled in school, it can mean the difference between hope and hopelessness.
The Friends of the World Food Program invite you to make that difference by participating in the 19 Cents a Day campaign and contributing to the Global School Feeding Program.
The World Food Program is the United Nations' major force in the global fight against hunger. It is the largest international food agency in the world. With the help of its partners, WFP fed 104 million people in 81 countries in 2003.
WFP works closely with other humanitarian organisations like Save the Children, Catholic Relief Services, and the Red Cross as well as local relief agencies.
For nearly 40 years, WFP has provided nutritious meals to schoolchildren in poor countries around the world.
